Farmerville, Louisiana is “catching the eye” of many in-state and out-of-state people who are interested in either residing or establishing a business here. The Union Parish Chamber of Commerce, Farmerville Town Council, and entities are working very hard to promote awareness of our town and beautiful Lake D’Arbonne. We are excited about being recognized as a “Certified Retirement Community” by the State. You will find Farmerville to be both aggressive and progressive in many areas, with your elected officials doing their best to secure productive grants for all the departments that serve our town.

Our town is much cleaner than ever, and we will begin enforcing procedures for “abandoned vehicles and junk” on November 1, 2009. I noticed that some of the abandoned vehicles have already been moved. Hopefully we will be successful regulating this ordinance, and when Spring arrives we will begin working on “abandoned homes and lots.”

We have about $6,000,000 in grants under consideration at this time for projects ranging from downtown beautification to sewer and water services. We are trying earnestly to obtain more up to-date equipment for our “crews” so they can do an even better job for our citizens. Recently we expended another $110,000 for badly needed street repair. When you come to Farmerville, you will notice new (and older) crepe myrtle trees along our roads leading into town as part of our beautification efforts.

Farmerville has many new and more established restaurants, and we are anticipating Burger King to begin construction in a few weeks. Fox’s Pizza Den opened recently, and I understand are doing quite well. Finding a place to enjoy eating in Farmerville is not a challenge.

One of our most anticipated projects is to extend sewer and water services across Lake D’Arbonne to our existing residents and businesses located on Hwy. 33 toward Ruston. We believe this will create more possibilities in a whole new area that will greatly add to our town.

Foster Farms of California, and now Louisiana, is in operation at this time. This is a tremendous boost not only for Farmerville and Union Parish, but for our entire region. Many workers have been hired, and we expect more to be hired once Foster Farms needs to increase their “growers” to meet demand for their products.

All in all, we have it “pretty good” here in tall pine country, and we invite you to come visit us to see what a beautiful lake we have as well. We are so proud of not only our town, but our entire Parish.

Mayor M. Stein Baughman, Jr.
